snow days

It’s hard to be a working mom and I know most working mom’s would agree with me. However, I know that as a teacher, I have it pretty good. I try not to complain too much about my job (really, who doesn’t complain about their job?!), but for technically only working 180 days a year, I really get the best of both worlds. And one of the added perks of my job just happens to be snow days!

The Weather Gods were looking down on the teachers in St. Louis last week and decided that even though we had Monday off for Presidents’ Day, we needed a few more days to ourselves and dumped about 5 inches of snow on us. We not only had Thursday off but Friday as well, giving us an unexpected 4 day weekend.

The Hubs (also a teacher) and I tried to use our extra days off to our advantage. Matt caught up on some of the art he’s been wanting to do (he’s an incredible artist), while I did some baking (and had a major meltdown in the process – I’m really terrible at reading directions).

20130224-174949.jpgRan to the store for some reinforcements. Forgot a few things but we survived!

And of course, we got to spend a ton of extra time with our little girl. MacKenna was able to finally get out and play in the snow on Friday. Included in the 5 inches of snow was a out a quarter inch of sleet, so Kenna wasn’t really able to walk in the snow, but she loved being out in it for the first time!

It was a great long weekend of relaxation. So much so that I got nothing done. I’m still trying to find a good balance between spending time with my little family, getting things done around the house, and getting work work done. No matter what I choose (always family first!), I feel guilty. I doubt I’ll ever figure this out. But, again, I can’t complain. I’ll take 2 extra days with my little family any day!

What are the perks of your job? How do you balance family, home, and work?

  • I get to set my own schedule! Also when I teach classes I get free childcare at the ymca here. Those are pretty good perks I would say 🙂 Shes adorable!

I would LOVE to set my own schedule!

  • I am also a teacher (5th grade) and new mom to a 5 1/2 month old. I definitely understand what you mean when you say you have a hard time balancing work, family, and house work. While I LOVE having summers, holidays, and snow days off, us teachers have a ton of work that we bring home during the school year too. It is so hard to get home from work and do anything besides spend time with my family. This happens on the weekends too. I haven’t found that balance yet and I don’t know when I will. In the meantime my house is messy and I have piles of things to grade. Oh well. Hugs to another working mommy! <3

I’m lucky that I don’t have a lot of work to bring home, but there is always something that I could be doing. Family always comes first though! I’ll get to work eventually… thank goodness for plan periods!

A perk of my job is that we can wear whatever we want. It really does make going to work nicer when you don’t have to worry about dry cleaning!

That’s part of the reason I’m a PE teacher – I can’t imagine wearing dress clothes every day! 😉

  • You HAVE to love the perks of being a teacher 🙂
Sounds like you had a good day!

Glad Kenna got to play in the snow. Wyatt did for the first time a couple of weekends ago and loved it! I’m continuing to do horribly on the word/ family/ personal interest balance thing too. I feel like I’ll never get it!

Maybe it’s just a new mom thing, or something we’ll never figure out. Or just a perfectionist thing… 😉

  • Shes getting so big! and her eye is looking great! The snow days are great for teachers, but no fun for us work at home folks! I did, however, FINALLY convince the hubs to buy me a treadmill. Yay for training for a half marathon on a treadmill… yay…

Haha… Seriously. I wish they would clear the sidewalks off. That would make my life so much easier!

Mmmm would love to get 3 months offs in summer. I work for a major airline and right now live in the middle of the globe, so my perk is that I get to travel with my family anywhere we choose to for very little. We average 4-6 International trips a year and can’t imagine having to go back to paying full fare tickets .

We rarely fly, so I would LOVE that perk!

I am glad that you only got five inches of snow. We got 11 inches in Centralia, MO. I hope you guys are all safe tomorrow when the other storm hits! I guess I need to invest in a treadmill!

How much snow do you have now? Where we live we didn’t get any more, but my school district had another couple of inches.

  • 5 inches of snow?! And your district closed for two days?! lol! I’m only laughing because here in Minnesota we get over a foot of snow and things resume as normal by mid day. 😉 glad you got some extra days to spend with MacKenna though! Great blog.

Oh geez, St. Louisans don’t know how to drive in snow at all! It’s pretty sad…
