HOW I WENT FROM PLATEAU TO PR
Have you been following a training plan but not seeing the results you want? Have you been diligently training for that PR, but just can’t quite seem to get there?
TRUST ME, YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS STRUGGLE.
After I had my second baby, it took me a long time to bounce back to my “old” self and get down to the speeds I was running pre-pregnancy. I was plagued with injuries, one right after another, and was struggling to consistently train and achieve my goals.
I was frustrated with my training, but knew I needed to continue running since it was the only “me time” I would get during the day as a working mom of 2. I ended up taking 3 months off of training – just running some miles to stay fit, but not actually training for anything. I was finally able to stay healthy for longer than a month at a time, and was ready to start digging deep to set a new half marathon PR.
I had my sights set on an April race that I would run with my brother. The last time we raced a half together, I set a new PR of 1:35:36. This time, we had a lofty goal of a sub-1:30 half marathon. I did everything I knew how to do – I created a plan that incorporated track workouts, tempo runs, and long runs and I followed my plan to a T. I included weekly yoga sessions with my BFF, as well as strength training 3 to 4 days each week. Plus, I finally had a good race strategy in place on race day.
I had a really GREAT race – I felt strong + confident going into the race and was able to follow my race strategy really well. But, instead of setting a PR, I ran over a minute slower than my PR.
Not ready to give up, I trained for another half marathon in July. I changed up my training and started running less miles, doing more speed work, and spending a lot more time on the track in the summer. I finally had a good nutrition program in place too that was helping me stay on track and get leaner.
Race day came and went, and I ended up running 5 minutes slower than I did in April…
WHAT WAS I DOING WRONG?!
Two weeks after that race, I went through a training with a fellow running coach. During that training, she had us run a 2-mile time trial to determine our current paces. Once I plugged my time into the pace calculator, I was surprised to see the exact half marathon time I just ran pop up. She explained that in order for us to achieve our goals, we MUST be training at the right pace – not at the paces we want to be running.
At that point, I made a shift in my mindset + my training. I followed the exact same training plan that I did for my last half marathon, but this time, I was running for my current pace. I was using the paces prescribed by the calculator and trying to hit my splits with every speed workout. I was running less miles, but because I was training SMARTER, I started to see those paces begin to drop.
I ran my third half marathon of the year in October. I had diligently trained + practiced my race + fueling strategy with every long run. I went into the race confident that I WOULD achieve my PR that day. And guess what?!
I ran a 1:34:58 that day. AND I WALKED DURING THE WATER STOPS.
Implementing these training and racing strategies into my own training as well as the runners I have coached has helped us see MASSIVE PRs in just a few months time! All of my runners are seeing increases in their speed, are stronger + faster than ever, and are CONFIDENT when they set foot at the starting line for their goal race.
